Frequently Asked Questions
I Necessity of the foundation course
Will it not be taxing for a student to do the foundation course during standards IX and X, which is beyond the school syllabus? One can anyway start the IIT-JEE preparation from Std.XI. Also, considerable attention should be given for the board exams during standard X. Then, why should a student undergo the foundation course? What is the necessity and importance of the foundation course?
Meant for only a bright student :
Foundation course at SMART is not meant for everyone. It is for the bright students who are comfortable with their school work and are interested in learning Maths, Physics and Chemistry with more insight, perhaps with the aim to join IIT in the future. .
Infact, necessary for a bright student :
In general, those who are already quite comfortable with the school syllabus can learn more and enhance their skills. The school syllabus is meant for the average and the talented students have great potential to learn much more. They should not be restricted in the process of learning and must be allowed to learn and explore more. .
In that sense, it can be said that it will be wastage of their talent, if not nurtured. Infact, the foundation course will have a great impact on the knowledge and aptitude of a bright student and will be the stepping stone for his/her success in the future.
Pleasure and not taxing :
A bright student takes lot of pleasure in learning the subjects of his/her liking. Its also natural for such students to relish challenge and the foundation course keeps them engaged to bring the best in them. They will view the foundation course as an excellent opportunity to enhance their aptitude and knowledge. They also have sufficient time to work. For others, learning more may be taxing. But, for these students, that's where their interest lies.
.Enhancement of Conceptual Clarity and Problem Solving Skills
The foundation course will make the students acquire good level of conceptual clarity in the three subjects. It is very important to have such clarity as it forms the very basis of their knowledge. Application of the concepts through good level of problem solving is another important aspect of the learning process, which they will get acquainted with. These two form the remarkable difference between the ways of learning at school and at the foundation course.
.Provides the right direction
Many talented students of IX and X standard level are without proper direction of learning and working. But, many parents are interested in giving their children the right direction of learning after identifying some talent in them. This foundation course will give the right direction and orientation of learning, and will be the necessary driving force for the students to work systematically.
.Smooth Transition for IIT-JEE Preparation
Many students who are very good in school studies are not able to meet out the expected levels of thinking and problem solving as required for IIT-JEE preparation, especially during the considerable portion of their standard XI. In other words, they are not able to suddenly get adjusted to the higher levels of analysis, conceptual nuances and varieties of application, as it is not the learning process in school or for that matter in any tuition classes meant for school syllabus all along till standard X.
This foundation course will mould the students to think well and make them apply the concepts much better through problem solving. Hence, it will form a relatively smooth transition in standard XI for such students to get adjusted to the levels of thinking required for IIT-JEE preparation.
XI standard made easy and hence more time for IIT-JEE preparation
There is a considerable leap in the difficulty level of the XI standard CBSE syllabus, compared to that of standard X. Hence, many students though might have performed very well till standard X, spend more time in coping with the school syllabus itself during standard XI. But, XI standard syllabus will be very familiar for the students of foundation course, and hence it becomes easier for them to handle the school exams in standard XI.
This gives a distinct advantage for the students of foundation course, as they will be in a better position to balance the school work and IIT-JEE preparation during standard XI. With proper efforts during standards IX and X, work load and pressure in standard XI can be eased out considerably, which is extremely important as more time will be available for IIT-JEE preparation.
Perfect launchpad for IIT-JEE preparation
Since foundation course students will be familiar with concepts and preliminary level of problem solving in XI and XII standard CBSE syllabus, it will be the perfect launch-pad for IIT-JEE preparation, since IIT-JEE is based on the XI and XII CBSE syllabus itself. They will have a good head-start in all the topics and hence will be more comfortable in assimilating advanced concepts and will be quick to adapt to higher levels of problem solving.
Infact, no other choice because of peer pressure
There are hundreds (or thousands) of students across India doing IIT-JEE foundation course of one kind or another. In Chennai, many bright students from various schools undergo foundation course at SMART. Since their preparation level will be much better than that of others when they enter standard XI, they will have considerable competitive edge in their preparation towards competitive exams like IIT-JEE. Hence, even from this point of view, one is left with no other option than to stay competitive by undergoing the foundation course.
Helpful for X Board Exam as well
Last but not the least, foundation course will be of good use for the X standard board exam as well. With the introduction of Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) and increase in the competition, even talented students need some special support to excel and attain perfect scores in the board exams. The concepts and their applications covered in the topics related to X standard syllabus will make the students be well equipped for facing any conceptual question in the board exam.
.Foundation Course students will have study materials for IX and X standard syllabus and it is designed to help them in understanding their syllabus more comprehensively and with better clarity. Regular tests based on the school syllabus will also be conducted. There won't be any necessity for additional school tuition as well if one opts for that.
To be at the top arena of ranking in the national level
With the knowledge and analytical skills developed through the foundation course, a talented student who has worked systematically for all the three subjects, will be placed at the top arena of ranking among peers in the national level.
II Course Structure and Schedule
What is the course structure and schedule ?
For IX standard students, the foundation course will be from June to March, and for X standard students, it will be from June to January. The course is offered in the following centres: West Mambalam , Adyar, Annanagar, Chromepet, Gopalapuram, K K Nagar and Nanganallur. Regarding the schedule kindly contact the office – 9500023248/9.
III Maths Olympiad Classes
What is the role of Olympiad Maths Classes ?
For those who have good flair in Maths, Olympiad Maths classes are a must as it will have tremendous impact on their preparation towards IIT-JEE. This is the best possible way of enhancing one's analytical skills and it has pronounced effect in one's development of aptitude and problem solving skills. In IIT-JEE, Maths is the toughest of the three subjects, and hence good exposure and experience in Olympiad Maths will be of great help.
Olympiad Maths has syllabus of its own, some of which coincides with that of IIT-JEE. The problems encountered in these classes will be more challenging and hence everyone can't be comfortable with it.
IV Coursework
What is the expected level of work to be done by a student ? Any more information on the three subjects taught and the tests conducted?
Though there is no mandatory stipulation, it can be said that, if the students can spend around two hours per day on an average, they can derive the best out of this course. As months progress, they may involve themselves more than this as well. They can utilize the holidays quite well. It is left to the caliber and individual driving force in a student to spend as much time as he/she feels. .
Understanding Maths will not be an issue for the students, though it involves higher level syllabus and problem solving. Physics involves lot of conceptual understanding and mathematical treatment as well. This will be quite challenging for many students, especially in the beginning, as they are not used to such levels of thinking and analysis. They need to make proper notes and get their doubts clarified in the class itself. They have to work systematically from the materials and books on a weekly basis, apart from thoroughly revising the class notes. Otherwise, it will become a troublesome subject in few classes itself.
For the first five to six months, Numerical Chemistry will be dealt with, as it is very essential for competitive exams. Here also, many students will face the difficulty, if they are not systematic. Once the descriptive part of Chemistry takes over, it will not be that difficult.
The best background required for handling the foundation course will be provided by the pre-foundation course (Sub-Junior Smart). Hence, those with that background will have a better transition.
The tests conducted for the foundation course syllabus will be quite challenging and hence will not be high scoring exams. Enough room for thinking and exploring will be there so that the systematic study and analysis is encouraged. Last minute preparations will not be suffice. The standards set in the tests act as the driving force for the talented students to prepare more efficiently.
One remarkable feature of the foundation course is that, enough room for self-exploration will be created for the students to probe many things on their own, through the appropriate books and materials provided to them. This will enhance their maturity in thinking quite considerably and that will be a great asset for them in the future. Hence, talented students should spend time in thinking and perhaps even discussing with their peers if needed be, about various conceptual issues they encounter while studying and solving problems. This will have a remarkable effect not only on their conceptual clarity, but also on their maturity in thinking and analytical skills.
However, full-fledged understanding of the XI-XII CBSE syllabus as required for IIT-JEE will happen only during the Senior Smart Course. So, a student should not feel dejected in not being able to understand advanced aspects when they read the books etc, or while solving problems beyond their current limitations. One has to be quite patient in such issues.
The overall real benefit of this foundation course will be realized only during the XI standard. Students who have put in more work for the foundation course will be at the best possible position to excel in their preparation towards competitive exams esp. IIT-JEE.
V Admission Criterion
What is the criterion for admission into Junior Smart Course ?
.Admission is based on two things :
- Quite consistent performance around 80% or above, in mainly the school math exams.
- Performance in the entrance exam conducted by SMART.
Regarding the Entrance Exam : It will be on Maths [8 th std. CBSE Maths and NTSE Maths may be taken as a good reference] for two hours and on Mental Ability [NTSE may be taken as good reference] for one hour. It will be above the standards of school exams and will be a tool to distinguish students with good knowledge and aptitude from others.
